Organochlorine pesticide residues in three leafy vegetables in Iligan City markets.

Abstract

Samples of three leafy vegetables, cabbage (brassica oleracia capitata linn.) and the two varieties of pechay (brassica campestris linn. and brassica chinensis linn.) were analyzed by capillary gas chromatography with electron capture detector to determine the presence of residues of the organochlorine pesticides α-BHC, γ-BHC, β-BHC, δ-BHC, aldrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, endosulfan I and II, 4,4'-DDT, 4,4'-DDE, 4,4'-DDD, endrin, endrin aldehyde, endrin ketone and metoxychlor. The organochlorine pesticides (OCP) found in cabbage were γ-BHC, β-BHC, δ-BHC, aldrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, endosulfan I, 4,4'-DDE, 4,4'-DDD, endrin aldehyde and endosulfan sulfate. The heptachlor was observed to exceed the tolerance level in some samples and endrin and endrin aldehyde were present although these OCPs are prohibited in any raw agricultural commodity. In chinese pechay, the OCP detected were α-BHC, γ-BHC, β-BHC, aldrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, endosulfan I, 4,4'-DDE, 4,4'-DDD, dieldrin, endrin, endosulfan II, 4,4'-DDT, endrin aldehyde and endosulfan sulfate. Heptachlor and β-BHC were found to exceed the tolerance level and endrin and endrin aldehyde were also present in some of the sample although these are prohibited in any raw agricultural product. In native pechay, only heptachlor was found. However, in some samples this OCP was found to be above the tolerance level.
